This is a great piece. I saw similar dynamics working morning shifts at a McDonald’s in a Rochester suburb. Not quite within a sketchy area, but near to one. There were a lot of good kids but the social dynamics of their peers draws them in to dangerous situations. It’s despair-inducing. How do you change a culture that is self-reinforcing and inexorably draws in those at the fringes who consciously want to escape?
A moving piece with sharp writing. It made me care about Markee without knowing him.
Amazing writing.
